The City of Winnipeg is seeking public feedback on the draft design for the proposed Bonavista Recreation Centre, a new facility planned for the city’s growing southeast neighbourhoods.
The 20,000-square-foot centre would be located in Fraipont Park, near Evelyne Reese Boulevard and Warde Avenue, and serve residents of Sage Creek, Island Lakes and Royalwood. The facility is expected to include a gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms and new outdoor park amenities.
Pam McKenzie, communication officer with the city, said the current draft design was shaped by feedback gathered in the fall of 2024.
“We gathered input from residents on what programs and amenities they would like to see,” said Pam McKenzie said. “We have used that input to develop a draft design, and we are now looking for feedback on that draft.”
Residents can provide input through an online survey available until June 30, or by attending an open house at the Southdale Community Centre on June 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. The open house will give residents a chance to view the draft design, speak with the project team and share their thoughts. Project materials are also available online at engage.winnipeg.ca.
The Bonavista Recreation Centre is part of the city’s Winnipeg Recreation and Parks Strategies and aims to improve access to recreation and leisure services in the area. The proposed site, on the western half of Fraipont Park, will not impact the existing toboggan hill, play area, boardwalk or lookout. However, the current soccer field would need to be relocated.
The facility would help reduce demand on nearby Southdale and Winakwa community centres, which currently act as regional hubs.
The project was first identified in a 2014 council-approved plan to accommodate population growth in the area. In 2024, council allocated $250,000 for a feasibility study, which included a preliminary design, assessment of community needs and a Class 4 cost estimate.
The 2025 capital budget includes $2.5 million for the project, with another $2.5 million forecast in 2026 to support design and construction. The total cost of the facility is estimated at about $15 million, with $5 million already earmarked by the city. Further progress will depend on funding from other levels of government and additional council approval.
If met with more forms of approval, construction could begin on the new centre in 2026. More information is available at winnipeg.ca/bonavistarec.
